Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
Gelco Chimney Inspection in New York: What to Know First
We provide independent Gelco chimney inspection across New York, typically completing a full Level 1 or Level 2 inspection in under two hours with a written report and camera photos before we leave the property. Most Gelco inspections in New York run between $189 and $349 depending on the inspection level and whether the flue needs camera work. You’ll get a written price before we touch anything, and the number on the invoice matches the number we quoted at the door.
This page is for New York homeowners who have a Gelco chimney liner or Gelco fireplace system already installed, or who bought a home where the previous owner put one in. If that’s you, call (315) 644-2982 and we’ll schedule an inspection at a time that works.
How Gelco Products Fail – and How We Fix Them
Gelco liners are generally well-built, but after inspecting hundreds of them across New York, we see the same failure patterns repeat. Here’s what actually shows up on a Gelco job:
- Gelco flexible stainless liners: torn mesh at the top plate. The Gelco flexible liner kits sold for masonry chimney retrofits use a stainless mesh wrap around the flex tube. In New York, freeze-thaw cycles at the chimney crown work that top plate loose, and the mesh starts to tear where it meets the termination cap. The symptom is usually a faint metallic rattle on windy days or small bits of mesh appearing in the firebox. The fix is typically a new top plate and re-securing the mesh, not a new liner.
- Gelco rigid liner sections: joint separation at the first elbow. On Gelco rigid liner installations, the first elbow above the appliance is the weak point. We regularly see joint separation here on New York jobs where the original installer didn’t use enough locking bands or the house settles seasonally. You’ll notice draft problems or a sulfur smell near the appliance. We re-align the joint, install proper locking bands, and run a camera to confirm the seam is tight.
- Gelco chimney caps: rust-through at the screen seam. Gelco caps hold up reasonably well, but the screen-to-cap seam is where New York winter moisture sits and works on the metal. After five or six years, we see pinholes rust through along that seam. It’s a cap replacement, not a liner job, and it’s worth catching early because a rusted cap lets rain into the flue, which then damages the liner below it.
- Gelco fireplace refractory panels: hairline cracking at the back wall. This is the one New York Gelco owners call about most. The back refractory panel behind the grate cracks, usually within three to five years of installation. The cause is almost always overfiring, not a defect. We replace the panel with a genuine Gelco refractory or a matching aftermarket panel, and we’ll tell you plainly if the crack is cosmetic or if it’s a safety issue that can’t wait.
- Cross-brand mismatch: Gelco liner mated to a non-Gelco appliance connector. We find this on maybe one in five Gelco inspections in New York. A contractor installed a Gelco liner but used a cheaper non-Gelco connector from whatever was in the van. The connector diameter doesn’t seat properly, and you get flue gas leakage at the connection. We correct it with the right Gelco-compatible connector during the inspection if you want it done same day.

Our Gelco Chimney Inspection Process
Here’s how a Gelco inspection runs when you call Ashby Chimney New York:
- 1
Call and scheduling. A live person answers at (315) 644-2982, day or night. We schedule a two-hour window and show up inside it. No voicemail loops.
- 2
On-site walkthrough and written price. We talk through what you’ve noticed, look at the fireplace and the chimney exterior, and hand you a written price for the inspection level you need before any work starts.
- 3
Visual inspection of the Gelco system. We check the cap, crown, liner, connector, damper, refractory panels, and firebox. Every accessible component gets looked at, not just the liner.
- 4
Camera inspection when needed. If we need to see inside the Gelco liner or verify a joint, we run a camera and show you the footage on the spot. You’ll see exactly what we see.
- 5
Findings review and written report. We walk you through what we found, what needs work now, what can wait, and what the repair will cost. The report is written, with photos, and it’s yours to keep.
- 6
Repair or cleaning if you want it. If we find a fixable Gelco issue and you want it handled same day, we give you a written repair price, do the work, and give you a written guarantee on completion. If we don’t do the fix, our report tells you exactly what to budget for.

AfterWhat Gelco Chimney Inspection Costs in New York
- Level 1 inspection (no camera): $189 – $229. Right for a Gelco system that’s been inspected recently and hasn’t changed.
- Level 2 inspection with camera: $289 – $349. What we recommend when you’ve just bought a home with a Gelco liner, or you’ve changed fuel type, or you haven’t had the system inspected in years.
- Level 3 inspection (partial teardown): $500 – $1,000+. Only when a Level 2 camera inspection reveals something that needs a closer look inside the wall or flue.
What moves the price: whether the Gelco liner needs camera work, chimney height and roof access difficulty, and whether we’re also doing a sweep while we’re there. Most Gelco inspections in New York fall in that $189 – $349 range. Call (315) 644-2982 for a firm written quote, and the estimate is always free.
Why New York Homeowners Call Ashby Chimney New York for Gelco Work
Most of our Gelco inspection customers have been through a bad experience before they find us. A technician who quoted one price and charged another. A repair that failed a month later and nobody would come back. We operate under the Kingswell Guarantee, which means the price is written before work starts, the guarantee is written when the job is done, and if a covered repair fails, we return and correct it at no charge. That’s the 365-Day Done Right Promise.
Nathan Corliss has been running chimney work across New York for years now, inspecting everything from prewar fireboxes in Inwood to brownstone chimneys on the Upper West Side. He grew up in Los Angeles and picked up his trade fundamentals at Los Angeles Trade-Technical College before spending decades inside actual flues. His approach: say the price first, put the findings in writing, and let the work speak for itself.
We also work with DuraFlex and HeatShield systems, which matters if your Gelco liner shares a chimney with a different-brand component or if a repair makes more sense with a quality aftermarket part instead of waiting on a Gelco backorder. We’ll always tell you which option serves you better and why.
Frequently Asked Gelco Inspection Questions
No. As an independent Gelco service provider, we are not authorized by Gelco, but a professional chimney inspection from a qualified company does not void a Gelco warranty. In fact, most Gelco liner warranties require annual professional inspection and cleaning to stay valid, so skipping the inspection is the bigger warranty risk. We document everything with photos and a written report, which is exactly what you’d submit if you ever need to make a Gelco warranty claim.
In most New York neighborhoods, we can schedule a Gelco inspection within three to seven days. During peak season before fall, it can stretch to two weeks. Call (315) 644-2982 and a live person will give you the first available window, not a callback form.
When a repair calls for a replacement part, we use genuine Gelco components when they’re available and make sense. For some older Gelco models where OEM parts are backordered or discontinued, we use quality aftermarket parts that match or exceed the original spec. We’ll tell you which option we’re quoting and why, in writing, before any work starts.
Gelco systems should be inspected annually, same as any chimney. If you burn more than a cord of wood a year, or if you’ve had any moisture or draft issues, twice a year isn’t excessive. The inspection catches small things like the cap rust and joint separation we described above before they become four-figure liner replacements.
No. If the system was camera-inspected within the last two years and nothing has changed, a Level 1 visual inspection is usually enough. A camera inspection makes sense when you’re buying a new home, changing fuel type, after a chimney fire, or when a visual inspection turns up something questionable that we need to see from the inside. We’ll never push a camera inspection you don’t need.
We show you the proof, usually on the camera screen or with photos. You get a written report and a written repair price. You decide whether to move forward that day or wait. Nothing gets repaired without your sign-off, and nothing gets recommended without evidence you can see for yourself.
