Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
Gelco Chimney Cap Installation: The New York Owner’s Guide
We stock and install Gelco chimney cap replacements across New York, with most complete cap installations running between $385 and $650 depending on flue size, roof access, and whether the existing mounting collar is reusable. If your cap is cracked, rusted through, or missing lid hardware, we can typically get it swapped the same week you call at (315) 644-2982. Most New York owners discover the failure the hard way: water staining on the ceiling near the fireplace, a birds nest stuffed into the flue, or a cap that’s visibly tilting after a hard winter of freeze-thaw cycles.
This page covers exactly what a Gelco cap replacement involves, what it costs in New York, when a repair makes more sense, and how we install it so it stays put through the next nor’easter.
Which Gelco Models This Applies To
We install the full Gelco line: the standard single-flue caps (G Series), the multi-flue caps (GM Series), and the stainless wind-resistant caps that Gelco builds for high-exposure roofs like you see across the Upper West Side and Riverdale. The critical compatibility detail is your flue’s inside and outside dimensions, not the Gelco model number on the old cap’s badge. Gelco caps are sized to fit over standard clay flue tiles, and a cap listed as 8×8 fits a nominal 8½-inch square flue opening with a friction-fit collar that’s screwed through into the tile.
A word on OEM versus aftermarket: Gelco caps are built with 24-gauge stainless or galvanized bodies and stainless mesh. We carry both OEM Gelco units and quality equivalents from Olympia Chimney that match or exceed the gauge, because some older Gelco caps are discontinued and the direct replacement is no longer manufactured. We’ll tell you which one we’re quoting and why. If it’s a Gelco cap on a prewar chimney in Inwood with an odd-sized flue, we may fabricate a custom mounting plate rather than force the wrong stock size. That’s the kind of thing most quote forms miss.

Signs Your Gelco Chimney Cap Installation Is Failing
- Water staining around the damper or firebox walls. This is the most common first sign. A Gelco cap’s lid welds eventually crack at the corners after enough New York freeze-thaw cycles, and rain finds the gap. Water then runs down the flue liner and shows up as rust stains or paint bubbling near the firebox.
- Birds or animal noise coming down the chimney. The mesh screen on a Gelco cap rusts through from the inside out, usually where it meets the hood. Once there’s a hole the size of a quarter, starlings and squirrels in New York find it within a season. You’ll hear scratching, or worse, you’ll smell a nest material fire risk the first time you light a fire.
- The cap is no longer level or is visibly tilted. This is almost always loose mounting screws, widened screw holes, or a failed friction-fit collar. On a steep Manhattan roof with routine wind gusts off the Hudson, a tilting cap is one storm away from becoming a projectile.
- Visible rust streaking down the flue tile. Galvanized Gelco caps eventually rust, especially within a few blocks of salt air along the Battery or in neighborhoods that get heavy de-icing salt runoff. Rust streaks are the warning that the cap’s body is thinning fast.
- The draft seems weaker than it used to be. A clogged Gelco cap mesh from creosote, soot, or nesting debris quietly chokes off combustion airflow. You’ll notice the fireplace doesn’t pull the way it used to, or smoke puffs back into the room on cold starts.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
Here’s the straight pricing structure for New York. A single-flue Gelco cap replacement, including the new cap, mounting hardware, and installation, almost always lands between $385 and $495 when the existing flue tile is in good shape. Multi-flue caps run $525 to $650 because of the larger unit and the extra anchoring required. If the flue tile is cracked at the top and needs a chase cover or custom mounting plate, the total can reach $750 to $900, and we’ll show you photos of exactly why before you spend a nickel extra.
| Service | Typical New York Price Range |
|---|---|
| Single-flue Gelco cap replacement (parts + labor) | $385 – $495 |
| Multi-flue Gelco cap replacement | $525 – $650 |
| Cap replacement with custom mounting plate or chase repair | $750 – $900 |
| Mesh-only repair (when the cap body is sound) | $225 – $325 |
Every quote is a written price before we start, and the job comes with our 365-Day Done Right Promise in writing. If the cap loosens or fails inside the guarantee period, we return and correct it at no charge. No service fee for the callback, no arguing about who’s on the hook. That’s the Kingswell Guarantee, and it applies to every cap we install.
DIY or Call Us?
If your chimney is a single-story, low-pitch roof and you have a proper extension ladder with a stabilizer bar, you can safely remove the old cap and take measurements: the outside width and length of the flue tile, plus the inside opening. Replacing a cap at ground level on a slab foundation is genuinely doable for a careful homeowner. Past that, the risk climbs fast. Most New York cap replacements happen on second- and third-story roofs with pitches that make a safe ladder setup genuinely difficult, and the fall risk is real. We use full roof harnesses and ridge anchor points on every steep-roof job.
The other place DIY goes wrong is over-tightening the mounting screws into a clay flue tile. One extra quarter-turn cracks the tile, and now you’ve turned a $450 cap job into a $1,400 crown repair. It’s exactly the kind of thing we’ve fixed for homeowners who watched a tutorial and ended up worse than they started. If you want a pair of eyes on it, call (315) 644-2982 and we’ll come out, inspect, and give you a written price whether or not you hire us.
FAQs
Expect 8 to 12 years from a galvanized Gelco cap in the New York climate, and 15 to 20 from the stainless versions. Coastal-adjacent neighborhoods and homes within a few blocks of heavily salted roads land on the lower end of that range. The mesh screen is usually the first component to go, followed by the lid welds.
Sometimes. If the cap body is structurally sound and only the screen mesh is rusted through, we can replace the mesh for $225 to $325 and you’ll get several more years from the cap. If the lid welds are cracked or the mounting collar is bent, replacement is the honest fix. We’ll show you photos either way. Call (315) 644-2982 and we’ll tell you which path makes sense.
Most single-flue cap replacements take 45 to 90 minutes from ladder setup to cleanup. If we’re also repairing a cracked crown or flue tile, add another hour. We’ll tell you the expected time window when we schedule.
We keep the most common Gelco sizes in stock on our trucks: 8×8, 8×13, 9×13, and 13×13 single-flue units, plus multi-flue blanks we can size on-site. For odd or discontinued sizes, we order direct and install the same week it arrives. Don’t buy a cap yourself and ask us to install a unit we can’t vouch for; it’s often cheaper to buy the cap through us at our trade pricing anyway.
We also carry cap and flue components from DuraFlex and HeatShield for larger relining jobs, so if the inspection turns up more than a bad cap, we’ll quote the whole fix in one written price.
