Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
Gelco Flue Liner Replacement: The New York Owner’s Guide
If you have a Gelco flue liner that’s cracked, corroded, or no longer drafting safely, we stock Gelco-compatible replacement liners and install them across New York. A full Gelco flue liner replacement in New York typically runs $1,800 to $3,400 installed, depending on the liner diameter, height of your chimney, and whether the old liner needs to come out in pieces. Most New York homeowners discover the problem the hard way: a chimney inspection flags it, or a combustion smell drifts into the house on a windy day.
We’re an independent chimney company, not a Gelco dealer, so our recommendation comes from what we’ve actually installed and watched perform in New York chimneys, not from a brand rep. Nathan Corliss has been pulling failed liners out of flues here long enough to know which failures are urgent and which can wait a season.
Which Gelco Models This Applies To
Gelco makes rigid stainless steel flue liners in two primary categories: single-wall liners for masonry chimneys and flexible liners for relining odd-shaped or offset flues. The single-wall Gelco liners come in standard diameters (5″, 6″, 7″, 8″, 10″, 12″) and graduated lengths that lock together at the seams. The flexible Gelco liners are sold by the foot and fitted to the exact run length.
How to identify what you need: Look for the manufacturer’s label on the liner itself if any section is exposed in your attic or at the chimney top. If the label is gone, measure the inside diameter of the existing pipe where it exits the appliance or enters the chimney cap. That diameter is what matters, not the brand. One compatibility gotcha we see often in New York: a homeowner replaced a wood stove years ago and the new appliance needs a 6″ liner, but the old Gelco liner is 8″. You don’t need a “Gelco 8-inch replacement” in that case. You need a 6-inch liner, period. We spec the liner to the appliance and the chimney, not the other way around.
On the OEM-vs-aftermarket question: Gelco liners are solid, and we install them. But we’ve also installed hundreds of feet of DuraFlex and HeatShield liner in New York too, and for most relining jobs, a quality stainless liner from any of these brands performs the same. What matters more than the stamp on the pipe is whether it’s sized correctly, installed with proper clearances, and connected so the joints won’t pull apart when the chimney heats and cools through a New York winter.

Signs Your Gelco Flue Liner Replacement Is Failing
- Combustion smell in the house, especially on windy days. A cracked liner lets flue gases seep into the chimney cavity and find their way through mortar joints into interior wall spaces. This is how most New York homeowners first notice a problem.
- Visible rust streaks on the chimney exterior or stains in the attic. When a steel liner fails, condensation inside the flue accelerates corrosion, and the resulting stains show up where the chimney passes through the house. We see this constantly in older New York rowhouses with unlined or partially lined chimneys.
- Pieces of terracotta or metal flakes at the base of the chimney. The old clay liner crumbling into the cleanout tells you the flue structure itself is degrading. If you’re finding debris, the flue is already compromised.
- Water in the firebox after heavy rain. A failed liner joint or a pitted section lets water track down the inside of the chimney. In New York, freeze-thaw cycles then make it worse each winter as trapped moisture expands and contracts.
- Your sweep or inspector flags it on camera. This is the right way to find out, not the only way. We put a camera up every New York chimney before recommending a liner replacement, and we show you the footage. You see the crack, the hole, the pitting. You’ll know why the swap is needed.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
For a Gelco flue liner replacement in New York, most jobs land between $1,800 and $3,400. A straight 15-foot run with easy rooftop access and a clean chimney that doesn’t need tile removal sits at the lower end. A three-story New York brownstone chimney with a stubborn old clay liner that has to be chipped out, plus a scaffold setup, pushes the top of the range.
| Factor | Cost Driver | Typical Range |
|---|---|---|
| Liner material (stainless, Gelco-compatible) | Diameter and run length | $450 – $950 |
| Removal of old liner/tile | Access difficulty, liner condition | $250 – $700 |
| Installation labor | Roof pitch, scaffold needs, joint fitting | $700 – $1,400 |
| New cap and connection hardware | Appliance connection type | $150 – $350 |
| Permit fees (if required in New York) | Varies by borough and scope | $75 – $250 |

DIY or Call Us?
What you can safely do: check your chimney cap from the ground for rust or missing pieces, look at the base of the chimney for debris, and note whether you smell combustion gases on windy days. That tells you whether you might have a problem. What we don’t recommend for a homeowner: attempting a flue liner removal or replacement without the right equipment and experience. Working on a New York roof in January or June, handling roof brackets, lowering rigid liner sections down a narrow flue, and making secure appliance connections are all jobs where the consequences of a mistake include fire, carbon monoxide, or a fall. This is not a garage project.

FAQs
A properly installed stainless Gelco flue liner in a New York chimney should last 20 to 30 years. The biggest lifespan killers we see in New York are condensation from an oversized liner, water entry through a failed cap, and creosote buildup from burning unseasoned wood. A liner that fails in 5 or 10 years usually failed because of one of those, not the steel itself.
In most cases, no. A cracked or pitted stainless liner can be sleeved with a smaller flexible liner in certain applications, but if the original liner is already compromised, a patch is a temporary answer. We will tell you honestly if a repair can safely get you through another season. For a long-term fix in a New York chimney, replacement is usually the right call. Call (315) 644-2982 and we’ll give you an honest read before quoting anything.
A typical Gelco flue liner replacement in New York takes half a day to a full day, depending on access, whether old tile needs removing, and how many roof brackets are involved. We’ll give you the expected time frame in writing before scheduling the job. Most New York homeowners are back to using their fireplace or stove the same day we finish.
We keep the most common diameters (6″ and 8″) in stock and bring what the job needs, including Gelco-compatible liners, DuraFlex and HeatShield equivalents, plus caps and connectors. If your chimney needs an uncommon size, we order it and return on a scheduled day. Either way, you’ll know the parts and the price before we start. Call (315) 644-2982 for a free estimate and we’ll set the appointment.
