Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
Olympia Chimney Chimney Cap Installation: The New York Owner’s Guide
Most Olympia Chimney chimney cap installations across New York run between $425 and $860 installed, depending on the cap size, roof height, and whether the existing mounting flange on the flue is still solid. We stock Olympia Chimney-compatible caps on the truck in the sizes that fit 90 percent of New York homes; most jobs are done in a single visit. Owners usually find out the cap failed one of two ways: a rainy-day drip down the firebox, or a bird sound in the chimney that turns out to be anything from a starling to a squirrel that made it past a rotted screen.
We’re not affiliated with Olympia Chimney as a corporate entity. We’re an independent chimney company that keeps Olympia Chimney products on the truck because Nathan Corliss trusts their build quality: tight welds, heavy-gauge stainless steel mesh, and powder-coated finishes that hold up better than the unbranded caps most hardware stores sell.
Which Olympia Chimney Models This Applies To
Olympia Chimney makes two cap lines that show up on roughly 80 percent of New York homes we service: the stainless and copper tops in their standard residential series, and the larger custom caps meant for multi-flue masonry crown setups. The residential series is built to standard flue tile dimensions (8×8, 8×12, 12×12, 13×13), so if you have a clay flue tile, the matching cap almost always drops right on.
The compatibility gotcha we run into most in New York: many brownstones and prewar buildings in Manhattan and the West Bronx have odd-sized flue tiles that were laid before modern sizing standards existed. If you have a 9×9 or 11×11 flue, you’re not going to find that size on a retail shelf. That’s a custom cut, and we measure and order it. The good news: Olympia’s mounting bracket system and the aftermarket universal brackets we stock (including Copperfield and Gelco equivalents) cover that odd-size range without needing a full masonry rebuild.
When deciding OEM versus aftermarket: for single-flue residential caps, Olympia’s OEM cap and a quality universal stainless cap from Gelco or Copperfield honestly come out about equal in durability over a 10-year New York lifespan. The differences matter in the hood shape and lid thickness if you have heavy tree canopy over the roof. For multi-flue jobs on older homes, we lean toward Olympia’s sturdier hood and full-size mesh, because New York’s freeze-thaw cycle flexes thin steel hoods until the corners split. Say the price first, put the findings in writing, and let the work speak for itself.

Signs Your Olympia Chimney Chimney Cap Installation Is Failing
- Water staining around the damper or firebox after rain. This is almost always the cap’s top hood rusted through or the silicone bead around the mounting flange cracked. Water gets in at the crown and runs down the inside of the flue.
- Bird or squirrel noise inside the chimney. Means the mesh screen has pulled loose from the cap frame – usually at the weld where the screen meets the hood. Rust gets in that seam first in New York winters.
- Cap is visibly skewed or leaning after a bad windstorm. The adjustable brackets that grip the flue tile interior have sprung or slipped. A leaning cap lets water drive straight down the flue wall.
- Rust streaks on the crown or down the exterior chimney. That’s the cap’s base plate giving up. The rust stain is bad enough; the real problem is the pinholing underneath that’s letting water into the masonry.
- You can see daylight through the hood from inside the attic if you inspect with a flashlight. That’s a seam split, and it means combustion gases are drafting into the house rather than out the top.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
In New York, an Olympia Chimney-compatible chimney cap installation typically lands between $425 and $860 installed. The range comes down to three things: flue size (an 8×8 costs less than a 13×13 custom), roof access difficulty (steep pitch, high roof, awkward ladder setup), and whether the existing mounting flange and crown are in good enough condition for a drop-in replacement or whether we’re also repairing the crown edge around it.
Every cap replacement Ashby Chimney New York does includes the cap itself, all mounting hardware, removal of the old cap, debris cleanup, and a photo report of the work plus what we saw down the flue while we were there. The written price comes before we touch a single bolt – that’s the Kingswell Guarantee, and if the cap installation fails within the guarantee period, we come back and fix it at no charge.
| Service | Typical New York Range |
|---|---|
| Single-flue cap install (8×8 – 8×12 standard) | $425 – $560 |
| Single-flue cap (13×13 or oversized) | $530 – $680 |
| Multi-flue full-width cap install | $650 – $860 |
| Crown repair or flange rebuild (if needed) | +$150 – $400, quoted after inspection |
We’ll tell you plainly if your crown doesn’t need any work and the swap is a straight drop-in. No one at Ashby invents masonry problems to inflate a cap bid.
DIY or Call Us?
What an owner can safely check from the ground: is the cap still sitting square on the flue, do you see rust streaking down the chimney, did a storm knock debris onto the roof near it. Those observations are genuinely useful; bring them up when you call and we’ll ballpark the likely fix over the phone.
What we don’t recommend: getting on a New York roof ladder, especially a slate or steep-pitched roof, to get a closer look. Roof work kills more people than any chimney job; it’s the one part we’ll say outright is not worth the risk. If you’re comfortable and the roof access is flat and safe, you can loosen an adjustable bracket and reseat a cap that’s slipped – but if the stainless has rusted at the welds or the flange is loose, a ground-level patch won’t hold through a real New York winter. Call (315) 644-2982 and we’ll give you a free estimate before you climb anything.
FAQs
Plan on 8 to 12 years in New York conditions. The mesh screen and the hood-to-flange seam fail first, because the freeze-thaw cycle and roof-level wind load hit those joints harder than the body of the cap itself. A cap that looks fine from the street is often rusting at the back edge you can’t see.
Sometimes, but rarely worth it. If the only problem is a pulled-loose screen at one corner, a competent repair is possible. If the rust has reached the hood seam or the mounting flange is wobbling, that cap is done, and so is the watertight seal it was giving you. We’ll tell you which situation you have – with photos, while we’re on the roof, not later from a sales deck.
A standard single-flue replacement takes 45 to 90 minutes once we’re set up. If the crown needs edge repair or a custom multi-flue cap has to be ordered, you’re looking at a second visit for install, but the measuring happens the same day as the first call.
Yes – we carry the common residential sizes for Olympia Chimney-compatible stainless caps, and we also keep Gelco and Copperfield universal units for odd-size flues. The odd-size custom caps get ordered with a measured spec from the roof, and lead time on those is typically 5 to 10 business days. Call (315) 644-2982 and we’ll tell you right away whether your flue is a truck-stocker or a custom order.
