Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
Copperfield Chimney Cap Installation: The New York Owner’s Guide
A Copperfield chimney cap installation in New York typically runs between $325 and $585 installed, depending on the model, flue size, and roof access. We stock Copperfield caps on the truck, so if your existing cap has rusted through, pulled loose in a storm, or let water pour down the flue during the last nor’easter, we can swap it the same day we’re out.
Most owners discover the cap has failed one of two ways: they see rust staining on the chimney crown below the cap, or they hear rain pinging into the firebox during a downpour. Sometimes a neighbor mentions the cap is leaning at a visible angle from the street. By the time you notice any of that, the cap has been failing for a while. New York winters and coastal humidity don’t give galvanized steel much mercy, and even Copperfield’s stainless models take abuse from airborne salt, ice dams, and repeated freeze-thaw cycles on the masonry they sit on.
Which Copperfield Models This Applies To
We install and replace caps across Copperfield’s current lineup, including the Legacy series, the Standard line with rolled rims, and the high-profile hooded designs Copperfield sells for wood-burning flues. If you have the original box or the stamped model number on the cap itself, that gets us to the exact match. If the cap is too far gone to read, we measure the outside diameter of the flue tile and the inside dims of the mounting area, then match to the correct Copperfield size. Most New York flues fall into the 8×8 to 13×13 range, but we see plenty of oddballs on prewar brownstones and converted city brownstone chimneys.
One thing we tell every owner: Copperfield caps are not universal. The mounting legs, mesh gauge, and screen pattern vary by series, and a cap sized for another brand won’t seat reliably on a Copperfield base. If you bought a Copperfield cap originally and want to keep the brand, we source genuine Copperfield replacements through our normal chimney-trade suppliers. We also carry compatible aftermarket stainless caps when lead time matters, and we’ll tell you the trade-off before you decide. Ashby Chimney New York is an independent service provider, not affiliated with Copperfield, so we don’t have to push one brand over another. We’ll install what fits your flue and your budget.

Signs Your Copperfield Chimney Cap Installation Is Failing
- Water pooling in the firebox after rain. The cap screen may be intact but the base flashing or mounting collar has failed. Water follows the flue wall down and shows up as damp soot or standing water in the firebox.
- Visible rust streaking down the chimney crown. This means the cap’s steel has begun to oxidize and shed. Once rust has compromised the rolled rim or mesh seams, it’s only a matter of one or two more winters before the cap loses structural shape.
- Cap listing to one side. High winds, especially on rooftop chimneys in exposed New York neighborhoods, gradually shift a loose mounting collar. A tilted cap no longer sheds rain evenly and can let water in around the base.
- Debris inside the flue. If the screen mesh has rotted or pulled away, leaves, twigs, and nesting material get past the cap. That’s how squirrels and birds end up in flues, and how embers escape during fire season.
- A missing cap after a storm. We see this after heavy snow seasons in New York. Snow slides off the roof, catches the cap edge, and rips the whole assembly loose. If the cap is gone, the flue is open to rain, snow melt, and animal entry.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included
In New York, a Copperfield chimney cap installed by us runs from $325 to $585. That’s the installed price, not a parts-only quote. The range comes down to three things: flue size (bigger flue means a bigger cap), roof access (a rooftop crown on an Upper West Side brownstone takes longer than a low-slope roof in Riverdale), and whether the previous cap left the mounting area in usable shape. If the old cap pulled away chunks of crown mortar or left rusted anchor screws behind, we repair that base before we mount the new cap.
The price you get is written down before we touch the roof. It includes the Copperfield cap or a compatible stainless equivalent, removing and hauling off the old cap, prepping the flue edge, and sealing the new cap so water can’t track under the base. Every installation carries our written guarantee through the 365-Day Done Right Promise. If the cap fails inside that year, we return at no charge, re-seat it, and make it right.
DIY or Call Us?
If you notice rust, a tilted cap, or water in the firebox, you can safely do this much from the ground: photograph the cap, check for visible screen damage with binoculars, and listen for water in the firebox during rain. What you shouldn’t do is climb onto a New York roof without the right training. Tile roofs are slick, slopes near the parapet are deceptive, and a fall from a two-story townhouse roof is a life-changing injury. Chimney work is roof work, and roof work isn’t a weekend project.
Even experienced homeowners misjudge cap sizing. If you order a cap by guessing, there’s a real chance the mounting legs don’t seat or the mesh clearance is wrong, which chokes the draft. We measure first, install once, and put it in writing. Call us at (315) 644-2982 and we’ll give you a flat price before we put a ladder on the house.

AfterHow Long Does a Copperfield Cap Last in New York?
In New York, a Copperfield stainless cap typically lasts 8 to 12 years before the mesh or mounting collar shows real fatigue. Galvanized versions, if they’re older stock, range closer to 5 to 7 years, especially near the coast or on chimneys facing prevailing wind and driven rain.
Can a Damaged Copperfield Cap Be Repaired Instead of Replaced?
Rarely. If the damage is a loose mounting screw or a bent leg, we can sometimes re-seat the cap and tighten things down. But once mesh rusts through or the rolled rim splits, there’s no reliable patch that survives New York winters. At that point replacement is the honest fix, and it costs less than repeat service calls.
How Long Does the Installation Take?
For a standard single-flue cap, it takes about 45 minutes to an hour from setup to cleanup. If we’re measuring, removing a rusted cap that’s frozen in place, and doing minor crown touch-up, it runs closer to two hours. We keep the work bundled and the price fixed before we start.
Do You Actually Stock Copperfield Caps?
Yes. We keep Copperfield-compatible caps in the common flue sizes on our trucks, so most New York replacements happen the same visit. The only delay is an oversized flue or a custom profile on older prewar chimneys. We also stock parts from DuraFlex, HeatShield, and Gelco when the job calls for those instead.
Say the price first, put the findings in writing, and let the work speak for itself.
