Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
DuraFlex Chimney Sweep in New York: What to Know First
We provide independent DuraFlex chimney sweep service throughout New York, from brownstone fireplaces on the Upper West Side to prewar chimneys in Inwood. Most DuraFlex sweeps take about an hour at the flue, and the plain-dollar price for a standard sweep in New York runs between $189 and $329 depending on liner height, creosote stage, and whether the chimney has been swept in the last 18 months. We are not a DuraFlex manufacturer affiliate – we are an independent DuraFlex service provider, and we quote the full sweep price in writing before a brush ever goes up the flue. If you own a home in New York with a DuraFlex liner and want an honest price first, call (315) 644-2982 and a live person will answer.
How DuraFlex Products Fail – and How We Fix Them
DuraFlex liners are alloyed well, but after enough New York heating seasons, we see the same handful of failure patterns repeat. Here’s what we actually find when we sweep them.
- DuraFlex 316L oval liners in older New York chimneys – creosote packing at the oval-to-round transition. When a round DuraFlex liner is ovalized to fit a narrow flue, the transition point creates a slight shelf where Type 2 creosote (the flaky, tar-like stuff) collects faster than anywhere else in the run. A standard brush pass can skim right over it. We run a rotary whip at that transition on every DuraFlex oval sweep, because in New York’s cold winters that packed ridge is where liner fires like to start.
- DuraFlex Pro 316Ti – surface erosion from soot acidity, not just creosote. The titanium-stabilized alloy handles heat well, but in New York homes that burn a lot of unseasoned hardwood, soot goes mildly acidic and etches the liner wall over time. We inspect for etched pitting with a video camera on every Level 2, because etched alloy doesn’t always look failed from the top. The fix is a chemical creosote remediation treatment after mechanical sweeping if we catch it before the pitting becomes a crack.
- DuraFlex 304 (entry-grade) – thinning in New York’s damp flue conditions. The base 304 alloy is thinner than the Pro lines and is more vulnerable to condensation during New York shoulder seasons, when the heat is off but the nights still drop. Condensation mixes with creosote to form a weak acid that accelerates thinning. We check wall thickness with a video probe and tell you straight if the liner has service life left or if it’s time to think about replacing before it pinholes.
- DuraFlex rigid-to-flexible connector joints – seam loosening from repeated thermal cycling. In New York, the temperature swing between a zero-degree January night and a five-hundred-degree flue gas the next morning stresses every joint. Loose seams show up as small soot stains on the connector. We inspect seam integrity on every DuraFlex sweep and reseal as needed, because a loose seam upstream means draft loss that pushes smoke into the living space.
- DuraFlex rain-cap and top-plate assemblies – raccoon intrusion and mortar debris in Manhattan and outer-borough flues. New York raccoons look at an uncapped or damaged DuraFlex termination cap as an open door. Where the cap is missing or bent, we find nesting material packed in the first few feet of liner. We clear the debris, sweep the full run, and recommend a replacement cap specific to the DuraFlex diameter – not whatever universal cap is in the van that day.

Our DuraFlex Chimney Sweep Process
Every DuraFlex chimney sweep in New York follows the same sequence, whether it’s a Level 1 on a Riverdale bungalow or a Level 2 on a Park Slope brownstone. Here’s what to expect when you book.
- 1
Call and written price. You reach a live person at (315) 644-2982. We ask about your fireplace, your burn habits, and the last time the flue was swept. Then we give you a written price range before we schedule, and the written estimate at the door matches that number.
- 2
Arrival and setup. Our technician shows up in uniform, within the arrival window, with drop cloths, HEPA vacuum, and the tools specific to DuraFlex liners. No white van mystery, no name tag you can’t read.
- 3
Inspection before the brush. We send a video camera up the flue before we sweep it. If the liner is a DuraFlex 316L round, we check the connector seams and the cap. If it’s an ovalized run, we look at that transition shelf. If we find damage, you see it on the screen – we never recommend a repair you can’t see with your own eyes.
- 4
Mechanical sweep plus rotary cleaning where needed. For light soot and Type 1 creosote, a properly sized poly or wire brush does the job. For heavy Type 2 or a glazed Type 3, we run a rotary whip at low speed to avoid stressing the alloy. We don’t over-torque a DuraFlex liner. The goal is clean alloy, not a cheap race to the invoice.
- 5
Post-sweep video and written summary. We camera the flue again after the sweep so you see the difference. We leave a written summary: what was found, what was removed, what the liner condition is, and what we recommend next – if anything.
- 6
Guarantee in writing. The Kingswell Guarantee covers the repair work we do. If something we repaired fails inside the guarantee period, we come back at no charge. That’s the 365-Day Done Right Promise, and it’s written on every job, not sold as a separate line item.

AfterWhat DuraFlex Chimney Sweep Costs in New York
Most DuraFlex chimney sweeps in New York run between $189 and $329, and here’s the honest breakdown of what moves the number.
- Standard DuraFlex sweep (Level 1 inspection included): $189 – $249. Single fireplace, one-story flue, light to moderate creosote, no cap replacement.
- DuraFlex sweep with rotary treatment: $269 – $329. Heavy or glazed creosote, oval transition packing, or a liner that hasn’t been swept in two or more burning seasons.
- Level 2 video inspection (add-on or standalone): $149 – $199. Full camera run end to end, seam-by-seam. We recommend this if the home is new to you or if the last sweep was before the previous owner bought the place.
- Chimney cap replacement for DuraFlex liners: $129 – $229 installed. Diameter-specific, never a universal bodge.

Why New York Homeowners Call Ashby Chimney New York for DuraFlex Work
The Kingswell Way is the reason we exist, and it’s built on five plain values: say the price first, show up in the arrival window, leave the flue cleaner than we found it, put the guarantee in writing, and come back if the repair fails. Every tech who walks into a New York home wearing our uniform has been background-checked, so you know exactly who’s at your door. We work on DuraFlex every week, but we also repair HeatShield and Gelco systems, which matters when a liner brand is end-of-life and you want an honest conversation about repair versus replacement. Nathan Corliss has been running chimney work in New York for years, and his rule is simple: a DuraFlex liner gets swept like it’s our own, priced like we’d want to be charged, and documented like the inspector is on the way. Say the price first, put the findings in writing, and let the work speak for itself.
FAQs
No. Proper mechanical sweeping with correctly sized brushes and low-speed rotary tools is actually what most liner warranties expect you to do. What voids a DuraFlex warranty is neglect that causes a fire, or using a too-large metal brush that scores the alloy. We document sweep frequency and liner condition with video so if there’s ever a warranty question, you have the record.
Once per burning season at minimum. If you burn wood more than three nights a week from October through March, sweep it twice. New York’s cold, damp shoulder seasons condense creosote faster than drier climates, and DuraFlex liners in city rowhouses often have less draft than suburban freestanding chimneys, which means more creosote parks on the liner wall. Call (315) 644-2982 and a live person will help you figure out your realistic schedule.
Most damage we find on a DuraFlex liner in New York is repairable. Pinhole leaks at seams, loose connectors, and damaged caps are all fixable with proper repair parts. Full replacement is only something we talk about when the liner has wall thinning throughout, multiple cracked seams, or metal fatigue from a past chimney fire. And you’ll see the camera footage before we recommend a dollar of work.
We schedule sweeps on a booked appointment, not a same-day promise we can’t keep. Typical New York turnaround for a non-emergency DuraFlex sweep is within the week, often sooner. Phones are staffed by a live person 24/7, so if you call at 9pm on a Tuesday, you’re not getting a voicemail loop – you’re getting a real person who can schedule you on the spot.
That doesn’t matter. We sweep and repair DuraFlex systems regardless of who installed them. We stock or can quickly source DuraFlex-compatible repair parts, and we use professional-grade materials from established chimney-trade brands – DuraFlex, HeatShield, Gelco, Olympia Chimney, Famco, and Copperfield – not whatever was rolling around in the van. Call (315) 644-2982 for a written quote before any work starts.
