Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
DuraFlex Crown Repair: The New York Owner’s Guide
DuraFlex crown repair in New York typically runs between $450 and $900 installed, depending on how much of the existing crown needs rebuilding and whether we’re working around a multi-flue setup. Most jobs are completed in a single visit, and we keep DuraFlex-compatible crown materials on the truck so we’re not guessing when we show up. Owners usually discover crown trouble the same way: a water stain on the ceiling near the chimney, or a flaking mortar mess on the roof after a hard New York winter.
The chimney crown is the concrete or mortar slab that caps the chimney top. It’s the first line of defense against rain, snow, and the freeze-thaw cycles that chew through masonry in this city. When a crown cracks and water gets in, the liner and firebox pay for it. We see it every season, and Nathan Corliss has rebuilt enough of them to know exactly where New York crowns fail first: the outer edge, where water pools, and the seam where the crown meets the flue tile.
Ashby Chimney New York is an independent chimney company. We’re not affiliated with DuraFlex, but we install and repair DuraFlex crowns regularly because it’s a product we trust. Say the price first, put the findings in writing, and let the work speak for itself.
Which DuraFlex Models This Applies To
DuraFlex crowns are matched to the liner system they sit on. The most common setups we work on in New York are DuraFlex Pro and DuraFlex 316L liners, but the crown itself is sized to the chimney’s outside dimensions, not the liner model. That’s the first compatibility gotcha: a DuraFlex crown from one chimney won’t necessarily fit another if the flue dimensions differ by even half an inch.
To identify your crown, look for the stamped ID on the underside or check the paperwork from your original install. DuraFlex crowns also have a visible seam pattern on the top edge that differs between their standard and heavy-duty lines. If the stamp is gone, we measure the crown’s inside and outside diameter, the flue opening, and the overhang, then match the replacement to those numbers. We stock both OEM DuraFlex crowns and quality equivalents from Gelco when the lead time on OEM is a problem. For most New York homes, the aftermarket equivalent performs identically at $60 to $110 less in parts cost.
The second gotcha: DuraFlex crowns are designed to work with their drip edge. If your original drip edge is still in place and in decent shape, we reuse it. If it’s corroded, replacing it adds about $40 to $75 in parts plus a little labor.

Signs Your DuraFlex Crown Repair Is Failing
- Water stains on the ceiling or walls near the chimney. A cracked crown lets rain run down the outside of the flue. The water shows up inside before the crown looks bad from the roof.
- Efflorescence, the white chalky residue on the bricks below the crown. Water is moving through the masonry and leaving salt deposits behind. This is a sign the crown is no longer shedding water away from the chimney.
- Spalling, or flaking, brick faces near the top of the chimney. Freeze-thaw cycles do this. Water gets in through a cracked crown, freezes, expands, and pops the face of the brick off. Structurally, it snowballs from there.
- Visible cracking or a sunken dip in the crown surface. You may not be able to see this without getting on a ladder. We photograph every crown we inspect so you see what we see, even if you never go up there.
- Sounds of dripping inside the fireplace after rain. That’s not a liner problem. That’s water running down the inside of the chimney. Most of the time it’s the crown, not the flashing.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
Most DuraFlex crown repairs in New York fall between $450 and $900 installed. Here’s what drives the spread:
- Single-flue vs multi-flue chimneys. A multi-flue crown is bigger, takes more material, and takes more time to form correctly.
- How much of the old crown needs demolition. If the existing crown is fully crumbling, we remove and rebuild it. If only a section failed, we repair that section with matched material and tool the joints to bond.
- Access and roof conditions. A steep roof or a chimney that’s hard to reach safely adds labor time. We’ll tell you upfront if that’s a factor on your home.
Every crown job gets a written price before we start, and the number on your invoice matches what we quoted at the door. We install with DuraFlex or Gelco crown materials, and the repair is covered by our written Kingswell Guarantee. If the crown fails within the guarantee period, we come back and fix it at no charge. No add-on warranty fee. It’s just how we work.
DIY or Call Us?
If you’re reasonably comfortable on a ladder, you can check the crown from the eaves for obvious cracks, pooling water, or chunks of missing mortar. You should not attempt to patch or rebuild a crown yourself. Working at chimney height with wet mortar and tools is dangerous, period. Falls from roof edges account for a significant share of New York homeowner injuries each year, and chimney work is near the top of that list.
Even setting the safety aside, a poorly formed crown fails again in a season or two. The result is a second repair that costs more than doing it right the first time. We’ve re-done enough homeowner patches to know. If you see damage, call (315) 644-2982. We’ll inspect it, photograph it, and give you a written price before anyone picks up a trowel.
FAQs
A properly installed DuraFlex crown in New York’s climate typically lasts 15 to 20 years. The repeated freeze-thaw cycles take their toll faster here than in milder climates, especially on chimneys that don’t get inspected regularly. An annual check of the crown will catch small cracks before they become rebuilds. If you want us to evaluate yours, call (315) 644-2982.
Yes, if the damage is limited to a defined section. We commonly repair crowns with spalled edges or a single crack by cutting out the bad area and forming a new section with matched DuraFlex-compatible material. If the whole crown is fractured or separated from the flue, replacement is the honest answer. We’ll show you the photos either way.
Most single-flue crown repairs in New York are completed in one visit of three to four hours. The work includes demolition of the failed section, forming the new crown with proper slope, and tooling the joints. We leave the work area cleaner than we found it, which is one part of the Kingswell Way we don’t compromise on.
We carry the most common DuraFlex crown sizes and a selection of Gelco equivalents on our vehicles. If your chimney needs an uncommon size, we source it and schedule the install within the week. We’ll tell you at the quote stage whether it’s a same-trip fix or a two-trip job, so there’s no surprise on the day.
If you suspect your DuraFlex crown is failing, or you just want a straight answer about what you’re looking at, call us at (315) 644-2982. We answer the phone with a live person, 24/7. No voicemail loops, no callback forms. We’ll talk you through what you’re seeing, and if it needs repair, you’ll get a written price before any work starts.
