Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
DuraFlex Damper Repair: The New York Owner’s Guide
We stock and install DuraFlex-compatible damper repair parts throughout New York, with most top-sealing damper replacements running between $340 and $610 installed, including the part, labor, and haul-away of the old unit. Most owners discover the failure the same way: a draft that won’t quit, a damper cable that suddenly goes slack, or a strange whistling when the wind picks up off the Hudson. The damper is the part that seals your flue when the fireplace isn’t in use, and when it fails on a DuraFlex liner system, it’s usually the gasket or the cable assembly, not the liner itself.
Which DuraFlex Models This Applies To
DuraFlex makes a few damper configurations, and the repair path depends on which one you have. The most common in New York homes is the top-sealing damper that mounts at the flue crown and works with a stainless cable running down to a handle or knob in the firebox. These come in sizes matched to your flue’s inside diameter: 6-inch, 7-inch, 8-inch, 9-inch, 10-inch, and 13-inch are the ones we see most often in prewar and mid-century chimneys around Manhattan, Queens, and the Bronx. Before ordering anything, we take two measurements: the inside diameter of the flue tile or existing liner, and the crown’s outside footprint where the damper frame sits. A damper that’s even a quarter-inch too wide will bind against the tile and shear the cable in under a season.
Here’s the gotcha most people run into: DuraFlex dampers use a proprietary cable termination, so a generic damper cable from a hardware store won’t seat properly in the handle bracket. We keep OEM DuraFlex cables and gaskets on the truck, plus quality aftermarket equivalents from Gelco and Olympia Chimney that match the original specs. Aftermarket is fine for gaskets and handles. For the cable itself, we use OEM. It’s a $40 difference that saves you a second service call.

Signs Your DuraFlex Damper Repair Is Failing
- The cable goes slack or won’t hold tension. This is the number one failure we see in New York, usually because the cable has frayed where it passes through the damper frame. Cold winters and salt air near the coast accelerate the wear on the stainless braid.
- You feel a persistent cold draft even with the damper closed. The silicone rubber gasket around the damper blade has hardened or cracked. Once the gasket loses its flex, it stops sealing against the frame, and your heated air goes straight up the flue.
- Water stains appear on the firebox walls after rain. A top-sealing damper is your first line of defense against rain entry. If water is getting past it, the gasket or the frame seal has failed, and you’re also feeding rust and mortar damage inside the flue.
- The handle spins without resistance. That means the cable has detached from the damper blade entirely. In some cases the blade is stuck open. Either way, the fireplace is now an open chimney, and you’re losing conditioned air around the clock.
- You hear a metallic rattle or whistle when the wind blows. The damper blade is fluttering because the spring that holds it seated has fatigued or the cable is no longer holding it closed. Wind rattling a loose damper in a New York high-rise flue can be loud enough to hear three floors down.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
In New York, a DuraFlex damper repair or replacement typically runs between $340 and $610 installed. The range breaks down like this: a gasket-only repair is $140 to $190, a cable replacement runs $180 to $240, and a full damper assembly with frame runs $390 to $610. What moves the price is access. Some New York fireplaces are ground-level with a roof that’s easy to reach, and others require ladder work off a fire escape or a roof hatch with a safety harness. That ladder time is real labor.
Every repair gets a written price before we start, covering parts and labor, so the number on the invoice matches the quote we gave at the door. The repair is covered by our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if the damper or cable fails within a year of the repair, we come back and fix it at no charge. No prorating, no argument, no second invoice. Nathan Corliss has been running chimney work in New York for years, and the rule has always been the same: say the price first, put the findings in writing, and let the work speak for itself.
DIY or Call Us?
There are a couple of things you can safely check yourself. Look at the handle in the firebox. Is the cable attached, or has it pulled free from the bracket? Look up with a flashlight. Can you see the damper blade fully closed, or is there daylight around the edge? Those two observations tell us a lot before we even arrive. What you should not do is climb onto a New York roof, especially a brownstone or walk-up, and try to reach the damper yourself. A top-sealing damper lives at the highest point of the chimney. The fall risk is real, the roof surface is often slate or aged membrane, and one wrong step turns a $300 repair into a hospital bill. We carry harnesses, rope gear, and the right ladder for the building type. It’s what we do. Call (315) 644-2982 and we’ll get you on the books.
FAQs
A DuraFlex top-sealing damper in New York typically lasts 10 to 15 years before the gasket hardens and the cable shows wear. Coastal areas and buildings with heavy wind exposure shorten that to about 8 to 12 years. The liner itself outlasts the damper, which is why we replace dampers as a standalone repair all the time. If yours is nearing that age and you’re feeling drafts, call (315) 644-2982 and we’ll inspect it.
Yes, in most cases. If the cable is frayed or the gasket is cracked, we repair those individually without replacing the whole assembly. We only recommend a full replacement when the frame is warped, the blade is corroded through, or the spring assembly has bent. We show you the old part before we recycle it, so you know exactly what failed and why.
Most DuraFlex damper repairs in New York take 60 to 90 minutes, including the roof access, the replacement, and a function test from inside the firebox. If we’re replacing the full assembly and the flue crown needs minor patching, figure two hours. We tell you the window when we book the call, and the tech arrives in that window.
Yes. Our trucks carry DuraFlex OEM cables, gaskets, handles, and full damper assemblies in the most common flue sizes, plus compatible parts from Gelco and HeatShield if a different brand fits better. We also stock liner components from those same trade suppliers, so if the inspection turns up a liner issue too, we can often handle it the same day with an updated written price before any extra work begins.
If you have a DuraFlex damper that’s sticking, leaking, or letting a draft through, call (315) 644-2982 for a free estimate. We’ll tell you what’s wrong, what it costs to fix, and put it all in writing before we start.
